D1 Sports & Athletics (D1SA) Football Press Release
Loudoun County, VA -- November 17, 2020
We are excited to announce that registration for the Spring 2021 D1 Sports & Athletics (D1SA) Football programs has officially opened. Two co-ed programs for athletes six through fourteen years of age are available for all Loudoun County residents: Spartans Flag League (SFL) and Football Skills Academy. There is no requirement for athletes to participate in both the SFL and Football Skills Academy. They can choose one or both programs.
The D1SA Spartans Flag League (SFL) consists of four age-based, co-ed Divisions: 8U (6-8 years of age), 10U (9-10 years of age), 12U (11-12 years of age), and 14U (13-14 years of age). Age as of January 1, 2021. The 7-week season will begin in April with games on Sundays in Leesburg, VA. Practices are optional with reserved field space on Saturdays. Athletes can join the league through general registration or groups of athletes and coaches can enter their own teams. Teams assembled from general registration will be selected at the draft after player evaluations. Information such as player evaluation dates will be communicated at a later date. Players will be outfitted in premium compression jerseys. Each team will play two games (on the same day and time block) per regular season week and will get a chance to play in the end of season championship tournament for the SFL Title Rings and Belt. The SFL Experience will include:
Stadium Turf practice and game site
Premium compression jerseys and flags
Live DJ with appearances from Sparty the Mascot
Player and Coach on-field interviews
Trained Game Officials
TeamSnap Tournaments smart-phone app
2 games each game day during the Regular Season
End of season championship tournament for SFL Champions Rings and Belt
The D1SA Football Skills Academy is for co-ed age based groups: 8U (6-8 years of age), 10U (9-10 years of age), 12U (11-12 years of age), and 14U (13-14 years of age). Age as of January 1, 2021. The Skills Academy will focus on QBs, receivers, and defensive backs. The 7-week program will be held on stadium turf in Leesburg, VA beginning in April on Saturdays for 8U and 10U and a mid-week evening each week for 12U and 14U. In addition to the QB, receivers and defensive backs focus, our curriculum will include speed & agility, punt, pass, and kick competitions, and mindset & behaviour teaching to drive athletic performance and results.
D1SA Football is a differentiated and elite experience designed and operated by mission focussed football coaches and league administrators. We offer Tackle Football in the Fall and our Spring Flag Football and Skills Academy programs offer opportunities for tackle football players to work on skills development, flag football athletes seeking high caliber competition, and recreational athletes to develop their overall skills and competitive acumen.
To our Tackle football players and families, after careful thought, we have decided not to pursue a Tackle season this Spring. The main drivers for this decision include the likelihood for limitations on field availability for practices three to five times per week with overlapping sports, not wanting to place the expectations on our athletes to prioritize and choose Spring Tackle football over traditional Spring sports, having to begin the preseason in Winter, the probability risk of starts and stops due to COVID which would detract from the learning and preparation process. These factors could result in a safety issue if the kids are not sufficiently prepared for full-contact games. As mentioned above, we are going to have the Spartans Flag League and Football Skills Academy this Spring so athletes have the option to stay involved with football while accommodating other athletic commitments like baseball, soccer, lacrosse, AAU basketball, etc.
